According to the latest Global Report on Food Crises, the number of people facing acute food insecurity and needing urgent assistance hit a five-year high in 2020. More effort needed to meet Europe’s ambition for zero pollution chemicals
More needs to be done by legislators and industry to reach Europe’s ambition of safe and sustainable chemicals, laid out in the chemicals strategy in October, according to the head of the European Chemical Agency (ECHA).
Germany’s pre-UN food summit talks criticised for ignoring ‘most marginalised’
In the run-up to the UN Food Systems Summit in September, Germany’s agriculture ministry launched its preparatory process at a conference this week where politicians, agriculture and health experts exchanged their views on future food production. However, the dialogue was criticised for missing the voices of marginalised people. EURACTIV Germany reports.

The Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety will discuss the ‘Fit for 2030’ package with Commission Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal, Frans Timmermans, on 14 July. The upcoming legislative package aims to align climate and energy policies with the new objectives of the European Climate Law. The Committee will also go over the latest World Meteorological Organisation report on the State of the Global Climate in 2020, with WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.

Commission to propose ban on ‘unsafe’ food additive linked with cancer risk
The European Commission will propose to member states the withdrawal of the common food additive, Titanium Dioxide (E171), from the union list of food additives after it was deemed unsafe by the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA).
